Anyone can be a private music teacher; you don’t need a college degree for that. However, if you want to teach young children using the Suzuki method, you need to be certified by Suzuki to do this.

You should get either a BA in Music Education (sometimes called a BME) or a BM if you’re more performance oriented. Aside from your core courses, you would need to follow whatever is required for that particular university department of music. This information is usually available on their webpage, and normally includes something like:

    Private lessons
    Orchestra three times a week
chamber music (string quartets, as a rule)
Methods courses (if you do a music ed degree), which include courses in strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, instrumental conducting, vocal pedagogy/conducting
Usually four semesters – each – of music history, music theory, and ear training/sightsinging
You should also take a separate course in conducting and one or two in composition
